“I was a cardio junkie in my 20s. My weekly workouts consisted of excessive running and teaching over 15 cardio, high impact and a few strength classes a week and keeping a very restrictive diet. In 2001, I was diagnosed with mono and I badly sprained my ankle on what I call, my last long run. I was so exhausted, I could barely train my clients or teach classes and running was completely out of the question, shorty after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that would change my life forever. My first reaction to these health issues was physical and mental weakness and due to lack of exercise and taking in more calories, I gained weight (50 lbs, to be exact). I was frustrated, and extremely depressed which is common for exercise addicts when they have to stop working out for any reason.
As luck would have it Healthworks was offering a Pilates Mat training for its instructors so I enrolled in my first STOTT Pilates course and immediately enrolled in Reformer, and then a year later Cadillac, Barrel and Chair. It took over 3 years to study this method, rehabilitate my body, and finally lose some weight. Pilates made me stronger everyday and I became leaner with a lot less effort and added stress on my body. Pilates along with physical therapy strengthened my core and improved my alignment, balance and control. I learned how to challenge my body using proper muscle engagement, alignment, precision, and repetition, instead of high impact exercise and cardio that was beating my body into the ground. As I continued to experimented with a multi-movement strength method that also increased my heart rate and gave me the “runner’s high” I was looking for. The dramatic mental and physical changes I experienced inspired me to transition my clients to the same workout philosophy. Some women were immediately open to it while others struggled letting go of the obsessive cardio. 16 years later, I have helped hundreds of women overcome their negative thoughts about their bodies, finally achieving their goals of living well, all without damaging excessive exercise and crash dieting. ”
